Refrigerant Buyer's Guide
Which refrigerant do you need?
Start with what you're servicing. A car, truck, or fleet vehicle uses automotive refrigerant. A home or commercial AC system uses HVAC refrigerant. The two are never interchangeable, and charging a system with the wrong one can damage it.
By application
- Vehicle built 2021 or later: R-1234yf. It's the current automotive standard and required on most new vehicle AC systems.
- Older vehicle (pre-2021): R-134a. Most cars and light trucks built before the R-1234yf transition still run on it.
- Existing residential or light commercial AC: R-410A. Still the most common charge in installed systems.
- New residential AC equipment: R-454B. The lower-GWP A2L replacement for R-410A in new equipment.
- Older AC unit installed before 2010: R-22. Supply is limited and pricing reflects it ā a system upgrade is often the better long-term fix.
- Commercial refrigeration: R-404A, R-407A, R-407C, or R-448A, depending on what the equipment manufacturer specifies for that unit.
